You need

To buy

  • 4 slices ham sliced
  • 1 firm apple

From your shelf

  • 4 slices swiss cheese sliced

Staples

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • to taste salt
  • to taste pepper

  1. Slice 1 firm apple into thin half-moons and set aside. Lay 2 slices of bread on a work surface.
  2. Heat 1 tablespoon butter in a large skillet over medium heat until it foams. Lay the 2 bread slices in the pan and let them warm while the butter melts, about 1 minute.
  3. Lay 2 slices of ham on each bread slice, overlapping as needed. Top each with 2 slices of swiss cheese and arrange the apple slices on top, fanning them slightly. Season lightly with salt and pepper.
  4. Cover the pan loosely with a lid or baking sheet and cook until the cheese melts and the bread is golden on the bottom, about 3 minutes. You will see the cheese soften and the ham warm through.
  5. Slide each sandwich onto a plate and serve warm while the cheese is still soft.

Note Swap ham for smoked turkey or roast beef. Keep leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to two days and reheat gently in a warm pan. Serve with a sharp mustard and a side salad dressed with vinegar to cut through the richness.
