Honey ham and turkey sandwich melts

This shelf's processed meats have enough honey and salt built in that they need nothing but cheese, bread, and heat to become dinner. A quick weeknight sandwich that tastes like it took more thought than it did.

Serves 2. 12 minutes, 5 at the stove.

About 300 calories a serving, 13 g protein, 14 g carbohydrate, 21 g fat. From USDA figures for 100% of the ingredients; amounts are the recipe's.

You need

To buy

  • 4 slices sliced cheddar or swiss cheese
  • 2 crusty bread or sub rolls

From your shelf

  • 1 kit Oscar Mayer ham and turkey breast sub kit, honey smoked

Staples

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • pinch salt

  1. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Slice open 2 sub rolls lengthwise and lay them flat, cut side up. If using hearth bread, slice 2 pieces about 1 inch thick.
  2. Butter the cut sides of both rolls or bread slices lightly with 1 tablespoon butter spread between them. Layer the ham and turkey from the kit on each roll and top each with 2 slices of cheese.
  3. When the skillet is hot, lay both sandwiches in it cheese side up. Toast for 3 to 4 minutes until the bread is golden, watching as the cheese melts, then transfer to plates.

Note Swap the cheese for provolone or mozzarella if you have it. Leftovers keep for a day wrapped in foil and reheat in a warm oven. Serve with pickles, mustard, or hot sauce on the side.
