Mac and cheese with buttered breadcrumbs
This shelf holds one thing, so we build on it: a ready-made mac and cheese that needs only butter and bread for texture, and a quiet night of eating. You'll have warm pasta in the time it takes to toast a crust.

To buy
- 2 slices bread for crumbs (any crusty loaf)
From your shelf
- 1 box Taylor Farms traditional macaroni & cheese
Staples
- 2 tablespoons butter
- to taste salt
- to taste pepper
- Tear two slices of bread into a food processor and pulse until coarse crumbs form, or tear with your hands and crush them in a bowl. You should have about one cup of crumbs.
- Warm two tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the crumbs and stir often until they turn golden brown and smell like toast, about five minutes. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper, then set aside.
- Heat the box of mac and cheese according to the package directions, which usually means opening it and microwaving or stovetop warming. Once hot and creamy, taste and add salt and pepper as needed.
- Pour the mac and cheese into bowls and scatter the warm buttered crumbs over the top before serving.
Note Swap the bread for crackers or store-bought croutons if you have them. Leftovers keep in the fridge for three days and reheat gently with a splash of milk. Serve with a salad or steamed green vegetable on the side.
