Buttered cinnamon rolls for supper
The grocery shelf has given us pre-made cinnamon rolls in a can, and tonight we'll warm them, add a savory cheese topping, and serve them as a meal. It's not traditional, but it works when you're hungry and tired, turning sweetness into sustenance with melted butter and a sharp finish.

To buy
- 1/2 cup [55 g] sharp cheddar cheese, finely grated
- 2 tablespoons green onion, chopped
From your shelf
- 1 can cinnamon rolls with icing, original flavored
Staples
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 pinch salt
- 1 pinch pepper
- Heat your oven to 375°F [190°C]. Open the can of cinnamon rolls and set the icing packet aside. Arrange the 4 rolls in a small baking dish or cast-iron skillet, spacing them evenly. Bake until the rolls are heated through and lightly browned at the edges, about 12 minutes.
- While the rolls bake, melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a small bowl and mix in 1 pinch of salt and 1 pinch of pepper.
- Remove the rolls from the oven and brush them with the melted butter. Sprinkle 1/2 cup of finely grated sharp cheddar cheese evenly over the warm rolls, then scatter 2 tablespoons of chopped green onion on top. Serve while hot, drizzling the icing packet over one roll per person if you want a touch of sweetness.
Note Swap in crumbled bacon or a dash of hot sauce for the green onion if you like. The rolls keep, covered, in the fridge for two days. Serve with a simple green salad or pickled vegetables on the side to balance the richness.
