Ham steaks with mustard and brown sugar

Thick slices of Hillshire Farm ham get a glaze of mustard and brown sugar, glazed and caramelized in a hot pan until the edges char. This is fast supper from one shelf, built for the weeknight when you need something on the table now.

You need

To buy

  • 3 tablespoons whole grain mustard
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar

From your shelf

  • 1 lb [454g] Hillshire Farm boneless baked honey ham

Staples

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • to taste salt
  • to taste pepper

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and melt 2 tablespoons butter. While the pan heats, slice the ham into four thick steaks, each about three-quarters of an inch thick.
  2. Once the butter foams, set the ham steaks in the pan and let them sear for 2 minutes without moving them, until the bottom edges brown.
  3. Flip the steaks and sear the other side for 2 minutes. Stir together 3 tablespoons whole grain mustard and 2 tablespoons brown sugar in a small bowl until combined.
  4. Spread the mustard-sugar mix evenly over the tops of the ham steaks and cook for 2 minutes, tilting the pan so the glaze pools and caramelizes on the ham. The edges will char and the glaze will thicken. Taste and adjust salt and pepper if needed.

Note Swap the brown sugar for honey and omit the mustard for a simpler glaze. Leftovers hold in the fridge for three days and are good cold or reheated gently. Serve with rice or roasted vegetables to stretch the ham and soak up the glaze.
