You need

To buy

  • 1/2 pound ground beef
  • 1/4 cup ketchup and 1 tablespoon vinegar ketchup and vinegar for the meat sauce

From your shelf

  • 4 honey hot dog buns

Staples

  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 clove garlic

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a wide pan over medium-high. Add 1/2 pound ground beef broken into small pieces and cook, stirring often, until it is no longer pink, about 5 minutes. Mince 1 garlic clove and stir it into the beef.
  2. Add 1/4 cup ketchup and 1 tablespoon vinegar, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Stir well and cook for 2 minutes until the mixture is thick and coats the back of a spoon.
  3. Toast the 4 buns in a dry pan or toaster until warm. Split and fill each bun with the meat mixture and serve.
  4. Add 2 tablespoons grated cheese if you have it on hand while the sauce is still hot so it melts.

Note Swap ground turkey or crumbled sausage for beef. Leftovers keep in a covered container for two days; reheat gently. Serve with dill pickle spears and coleslaw on the side, or use the filling to top rice or toast instead.
