Grilled ham and Swiss cheese baguette

This is a warm, pressed sandwich—the ham and cheese melt together while the bread toasts golden outside and stays soft within. You've got the main ingredient ready to go, so dinner comes together in minutes with just butter and a hot pan.

You need

From your shelf

  • 1 baguette (8 ounces) sweet slice ham & swiss cheese baguette

Staples

  • 1 tablespoon butter

  1. Slice the baguette horizontally into two halves without cutting all the way through the bottom crust so it opens like a book. Butter the inside surfaces lightly with 1 teaspoon of butter on each half.
  2. Set a heavy skillet or griddle over medium heat. Once hot, lay the baguette cut-side down and press gently with a spatula or your hand, cooking for 3 to 4 minutes until the cut surface is golden and the cheese starts to soften.
  3. Fold the baguette closed, cut it in half crosswise, and serve warm.

Note Swap the ham for roast beef if your shelf carries it next time. Wrap leftovers in foil and reheat gently in a 325°F [160°C] oven for 5 minutes. Serve alongside a simple green salad or pickles to cut the richness.
