You need

From your shelf

  • 8 ounces [225 g] honey roasted ham

Staples

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 small onion
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper

  1. Slice the honey roasted ham into 1/2-inch-thick pieces. Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat, then lay in the ham slices without crowding; work in batches if needed. Cook until the edges are browned and caramelized, about 2 minutes per side, then transfer to a plate.
  2. Mince 1 small onion into 1/4-inch pieces. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon butter to the skillet, then add the onion with 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Stir often until the onion softens and turns golden at the edges, about 4 minutes.
  3. Return the ham to the skillet and toss gently to coat in the butter and onion. Warm through for 1 minute, then taste and adjust seasoning. Serve over rice, couscous, or toasted bread.

Note To swap: use a sliced apple in place of onion for a brighter sauce. Leftovers keep in a covered container for three days and reheat gently in a low oven. Serve alongside roasted vegetables or a green salad to balance the ham's salt.
