Sausage gravy over rice

A weeknight supper built from what you have: Jimmy Dean sausage gravy concentrate over rice makes a humble, filling meal. The concentrate does the work while you cook the rice; serve with a vegetable or eggs to round it out.

Serves 2. 20 minutes, 5 at the stove.

You need

From your shelf

  • 1 container Jimmy Dean fully cooked sausage gravy concentrate

Staples

  • 1 cup rice
  • 2 cups water

  1. Bring 2 cups water to a boil in a saucepan. Stir in 1 cup rice, cover, and reduce heat to low. Cook until the rice is tender and water is absorbed, about 18 minutes; leave it undisturbed to steam.
  2. While the rice cooks, prepare the sausage gravy concentrate according to package directions in a separate skillet over medium heat, stirring often. The gravy should be warm and pourable when the rice is done.
  3. Divide the rice between two bowls and pour the sausage gravy over top.

Note To stretch this into a fuller meal, serve with a fried or poached egg on top of each bowl, or add a simple green vegetable. Leftover gravy keeps in the refrigerator for three days and reheats gently on the stove top. You can use any grain in place of rice; cook it the same way.
