Crescent rolls with ham and cheese
Crescent rolls wrapped around ham and cheese make a quick, warm dinner that asks for little more than what you already have. The dough bakes to golden and flaky in twenty minutes, transforming a shelf staple into something that feels made for company.

To buy
- 4 ounces sliced ham
- 2 ounces cheddar cheese, sliced or grated
From your shelf
- 1 can original crescent rolls
Staples
- 1 tablespoon butter
- pinch salt
- pinch pepper
- Heat the oven to 375°F [190°C]. Open the crescent roll can and separate the dough into triangles along the perforations.
- Lay each triangle flat on a work surface. Tear 1 slice of ham into two pieces and lay them on the wide end of a triangle, then tear 1/2 ounce of cheese and scatter it over the ham. Sprinkle with a pinch of salt and pepper. Roll up from the wide end toward the point and set seam-side down on a baking sheet. Repeat with the remaining triangles, ham, and cheese.
- Brush the tops of the rolls lightly with 1 tablespoon melted butter. Bake until golden brown, about 20 minutes; they are done when the pastry is deep gold and the cheese below has started to show at the edges.
- Let cool for 2 minutes before serving.
Note Swap ham for cooked sausage or roasted turkey if you have it. Leftover rolls keep in an airtight container for two days and reheat gently in a 300°F oven. Serve with a green salad or a cup of broth to lighten the meal.
