Ham and Swiss cheese melt on rye

A warm ham and cheese sandwich built on the Swiss slices you have, with melted cheese that's creamy on bread. Toast it in a hot pan so the cheese softens while the bread turns golden, and you have dinner in minutes.

You need

To buy

  • 4 oz sliced ham
  • 4 slices rye bread

From your shelf

  • 6 slices Sargento creamery sliced baby Swiss natural cheese

Staples

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • pinch salt
  • pinch pepper

  1. Butter one side of 2 slices of rye bread and lay them butter-side down in a skillet over medium heat. Top each slice with 2 ounces of ham and 3 slices of Swiss cheese, then cover each with another slice of rye bread, butter-side up.
  2. Toast the sandwich until the bottom is golden and crisp, about 3 to 4 minutes, listening for a gentle sizzle. The cue is deep golden colour on the bread and the cheese beginning to soften.
  3. Flip and toast the other side until the bread is golden and the cheese is fully soft, another 2 to 3 minutes. Press gently with the spatula to help the cheese melt into the bread, then transfer to a plate and season with a pinch of salt and pepper.

Note Swap ham for turkey or roast beef if you have it. The sandwich keeps well wrapped in foil for lunch tomorrow. Serve with mustard, pickles, or a simple green salad on the side to cut the richness.
